The Garmin GPSMAP® 86i in the Marine Handheld With inReach® Capabilities configuration is built for boaters who want confident navigation plus global communication features in a handheld. Designed to feel at home on the water, it is water-resistant to IPX7 and it floats, making it a practical choice for fishing, sailing, and cruising.
Along with a worldwide basemap and onboard sensors for navigation, GPSMAP 86i can connect wirelessly with compatible onboard Garmin marine electronics to stream boat data to the handheld and add convenient control for select systems. For time away from cell service, inReach features support two-way messaging and interactive SOS through the Iridium® satellite network, with battery life rated up to 35 hours at 10-minute tracking.
Display
When paired with compatible Garmin chartplotters and instruments, GPSMAP 86i can display real-time boat data directly on the handheld. This makes it easier to keep key information in view while moving around the deck, without needing to stay at the helm to check the main display.
Connectivity
Built-in inReach capabilities use the Iridium® satellite network for two-way communication, including sending and receiving custom and preset text messages or emails with delivery confirmation. In an emergency, the device can initiate an interactive SOS message to the Garmin IERCC, a 24/7 staffed emergency response coordination center.

For more consistent readouts on the water, GPSMAP 86i includes an adjustable GPS filter designed to smooth speed and heading indications as the boat moves over swells. This helps deliver steadier tracking information during changing conditions while underway.
Navigation
GPSMAP 86i adds practical on-the-water integration when used with compatible equipment. It can provide remote operation of select onboard Fusion marine products via Fusion-link Audio. It can also act as an autopilot remote through the autopilot app, letting the user change heading, engage pattern steering, and follow a GPS route even when not at the helm.
Connectivity
Out of the box, GPSMAP 86i includes a worldwide shaded relief basemap that covers oceans, seas, major lakes and rivers, along with political boundaries and time zone information. For expanded coastal detail, it supports optional BlueChart g3 coastal charts that combine Garmin and Navionics data. It also supports direct-to-device satellite imagery and accepts external storage with a 32 GB max microSD™ card.

Sized at 2.65" x 7" x 1.7" (6.75w x 17.8h x 4.4d cm) and weighing 9.59 oz (272 g), GPSMAP 86i is designed for handheld use with a transflective, 65K color TFT display at 240 x 400 pixels. It meets MIL-STD-810 for thermal, shock, and water, carries an IPX7 water rating, and uses a rechargeable, internal lithium-ion battery rated up to 35 hours at 10-minute tracking; up to 200 hours at 30-minute tracking (power save mode).
