The Garmin inReach® Messenger SOS Satellite Communicator is built for riders, hikers, and travelers who head beyond reliable cellular coverage and still want a dependable way to stay connected. Compact and impact-resistant, it supports two-way text messaging through satellite and can also use a cellular connection when available when paired with the Garmin Messenger™ smartphone app.
For added confidence in remote areas, it can trigger an interactive SOS message to Garmin Response℠, a 24/7-staffed international coordination center. A sunlight-readable monochrome display helps confirm messages, read replies, and keep communication going even if a phone battery dies. With a rechargeable internal lithium-ion battery rated up to 28 days with a message or location sent every 10 minutes with full sky view, it’s designed to go the distance.
Connectivity
inReach® Messenger helps keep conversations going outside cellular networks by enabling two-way text messaging via satellite. When paired with the Garmin Messenger™ smartphone app, it can use a phone’s cellular connection when available and switch to the Iridium® satellite network when coverage drops, supporting both one-to-one and group messages.
Safety
In an emergency, the device can trigger an interactive SOS message to Garmin Response℠, a 24/7-staffed international coordination center. The on-device display makes it easy to verify that a message has been sent and to read responses directly on the communicator when needed.
Battery
Built for backcountry use, this compact communicator is impact-resistant and water-rated to IPX7, with a chemically strengthened glass lens. Its rechargeable internal lithium-ion battery provides up to 28 days of battery life in 10-minute tracking mode, and it can also be used to charge a phone from the device battery.
Connectivity
Using the Garmin Messenger™ smartphone app, inReach® Messenger is designed to make off-grid communication straightforward, including syncing contacts and creating messages with a virtual keyboard. It supports sending and receiving text messages to SMS and email, messaging other inReach device users, exchanging locations, and sending group messages. Simple check-in messages can be sent and do not count toward allotted text messages. Bluetooth® and ANT+® wireless connectivity support pairing and integration options shown in the specifications below.
Navigation
Beyond messaging, inReach® Messenger adds practical tools for remote travel. TracBack® routing helps navigate back to where the trip started the same way you came. Weather reports can be requested, including forecasts for destinations. For location performance, it supports GPS, Galileo, QZSS, and BeiDou along with a high-sensitivity receiver, plus a GPS compass (while moving), helping keep orientation and tracking features working when the route gets unfamiliar.

Sized at 3.1" x 2.5" x 0.9" (7.8 x 6.4 x 2.3 cm) and weighing 4 oz (113.9 g), the communicator is easy to carry while still delivering a durable build. The sunlight-readable, monochrome, transflective memory-in-pixel (MIP) display is designed for outdoor visibility, and the unit charges via USB-C.
